With over 700 miles of designated Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trails, we invite you to explore the beauty and excitement of our forest responsibly.  This page provides essential information on motorized vehicle use trail permits, how to obtain them, and guidelines for safe and respectful trail use. TL;DR —  BHPFA no longer sells ATV / OHV trail permits online or in our Wind Cave National Park store.  Buy your permit online from Black Hills and Badlands Tourism Association if you have time to wait for it to be delivered via mail, or drop in at one of many local in-person vendors throughout the Black Hills.

About Motorized Vehicle Use Trail Permits

What are Motorized Vehicle Use Trail Permits? A Motorized Vehicle Use Trail Permit is required for any motor vehicle traveling on designated motorized trails in the South Dakota portion of the Black Hills National Forest. These permits help maintain and support the forest’s extensive trail system.

Why are Permits Necessary? Permits ensure all users contribute to the maintenance and preservation of our trails. The funds from permit sales are used to keep the trails safe and enjoyable for everyone.


How to Obtain ATV / OHV Permits for Black Hills National Forest

Where to Buy Permits Same-Day: Permits can be purchased at various locations:

Using the Permits

Displaying the Permit To ensure compliance, permits must be visibly displayed on your vehicle:

  • ATVs/UTVs: Front left external wheel panel.
  • Motorcycles/Dirt Bikes: Front center fork or top of the fender.
  • Vehicles with Windshields: Driver’s side on the front windshield.

Validity and Expiry

  • Permits are valid through December 31 of the year purchased.
  • Ensure your permit is visible and not covered by dirt, gear, or other items.

Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM)

Importance of MVUM Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) are essential for navigating the Black Hills National Forest. They indicate which roads, trails, and areas are available for public motorized travel.

How to Obtain MVUMs

Using MVUMs on Mobile Devices

  1. Download the free Avenza Maps app from your app store.
  2. Open the app and download the MVUMs for Bearlodge, Northern Hills, Mystic, and Hell Canyon Ranger Districts.
  3. Use the maps offline to navigate without needing cellular service.

Cross-Country Travel Restrictions Cross-country travel is prohibited. Stay on designated trails to protect the environment.

Licensing and Age Requirements

  • Licensed vehicles may operate on public highways and Forest Service roads.
  • Drivers must be at least 14 years old with a valid driver’s license.
  • Helmets are required for all users under 18, and eye protection is mandatory.
